How do you determine the surface roughness on sheet metal?

Yes a surface profilometer is one instrument for measuring roughness. It also depends on how rough is rough. If you are dealing with very smooth surfaces (like Si wafers used to make computer chips), you need instruments that are much more sensitive than a typical profilometer. If you are dealing with very rough surfaces for example %26gt;700 microinch Ra roughness, (like very coarse sand paper, 60 or 80 grit), you need a profilometer rated for very rough surfaces.

By use of a surface roughness measuring machine or by use of a comparator. The machine can give you values for Ra, Rz etc. The comparator will have several sample surfaces of varying roughness and you have to decide by touch and sight where the surface you are interested in falls. How do you determine the surface roughness on sheet metal?
? I guess you can feel it. What are you trying to do, paint it? Fresh sheet metal is not rough at all. It's very smooth.
