What is the best fixing for sheet metal?

I was trying to fit a roof rack to my car when the bolt pulled out the threaded rivet i was attaching it to. The hole it has now created is probably around 13mm to match the bolt head. Which is the best fixing to use? Obviously the expanding type, but which is better for thin metal such as a car? It has to be strong otherwise the wind will take it clean off.

you could go with a large headed blind rivet it will be noticeable but it will look really cool

put more in evenly spaced along the surface so it looks like it was the style you are going for

i build robots and we have had to do it before when money was tightWhat is the best fixing for sheet metal?
What you want is a ';helicoil';,its a system where the hole is drilled out to the next size up and a threaded insert is put in that has the original internal thread size.I'd say the best place for this would be your local independent motorcycle repair shop.Bike are always needing these.
Maybe a ';rivnut';?
